Tips in Choosing Kids’ Boots for Winter

For adults, boots are a statement of fashion. For children, they serve more than that. Kids boots are more for protection than fashion. In other words, these kids cowboy boots are not merely for looks. Due to their durable construction, these boots protect their delicate feet from injury, debris, and extreme temperature better than standard children’s shoes.

Another essential feature about children’s boots is that it keeps their feet warm and dry. This is important during winter or the rainy season. Dry feet, aside from being more comfortable, prevent the growth of bacteria and fungi that may result to skin diseases such as athlete’s foot, scabies, or sores.

Choosing the right boots for children during winter time or the rainy season is important. Here are some tips on how to do just that.

1) First decide the type of boots the child needs. For example, if the winter climate in your area is a mix of rain and snow, it would be best to purchase waterproof boots rather than cool-looking fur boots designed for warmth.

Do not just choose a pair for its design or style. For example, great-looking cowboy boots for kids may not be sufficient in retaining warmth due to decorative holes that are sometimes present in cowboy boots.

2) Know your child’s shoe size. Then in buying his or her boots, buy one size larger than they usually wear. The reason for this is that it allows them to wear multiple layers of socks to warm up their feet. The extra space inside the boots accommodates the multiple socks easily, causing no discomfort.

3) To save money, it would be best to buy boots much earlier or even before the cold or wet season. You can check online catalogues for overstocks. A lot of websites have overstocks that comprise of last year’s fashion trends (which are still fashionable this year) or leftover sizes.

4) A good consideration for selecting a pair of children’s boots is to check if it has a removable liner, especially important if you are expecting a long winter or wet season. Dry liners make wearing these boots comfortable for kids. John Deere boots are some of the best boots with this feature.

These boots with removable liners can be used as spring rain boots when the liner is removed. If the liner becomes dirty, you can just remove and place it in the washing machine.

5) Choose boots that come a little below the midcalf and are wider at the top. This design makes it easy for the child to tuck in their pants to help keep their feet dry and warm.

6) Many children find it difficult to knot a shoelace. Therefore, choose boots that are easily slipped on and fastened. Boots that can be fastened using Velcro straps are excellent. Teach the child on how to put on or take off the boots independently.

7) Check if the bottom of the boots that you bought has proper traction else the child may slip while walking on slippery ice, sleet, or water film. The soles of the boots should be thick and durable, preferably made out of rubber.
